Starting Feb 1, 2024 through April 2024, you can have your taxes prepared by an IRS-certified tax preparer for FREE at CONNECT through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program

Whether you are filing as an individual person or have a family, our IRS-trained volunteers can help maximize your refund and help you receive credits such as the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit. VITA offers free tax help to individuals with low income, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and limited English-speaking tax payers. Many of our clients happily find out that they are entitled to money back from the government when they file. Whatever your needs, we strive to make the tax return process as painless as possible.   • Each VITA volunteer will be making a difference in the lives of dozens of people in addition to:

    • Sharpening their skills and improving others such as attention to detail and interpersonal communication

    • Receiving FREE IRS tax training and certification.

    • Have an amazing volunteer experience that can boost your resume

    • Meet and network with NEW people and connect with people that share similar interests

  • If you're you interested in tax preparation but worried about learning tax law or making a mistake on someone's taxes, relax, we'll train you. VITA volunteers are protected under the volunteer protection act. You'll attend a training on tax law, and learn to use the tax software. In the first couple of weeks, we'll pair you with an experienced volunteer, and after you finish each return the someone will thoroughly check all of your work. There will always be a site coordinator and other experienced volunteers to help answer any questions you may have!

  • If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien, whether you must file a federal income tax return depends on your gross income, your filing status, your age, and whether you are a dependent. The filing requirements apply even if you owe no tax. And even if you don't have to file, you should file a tax return if you can get money back.

  • The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free help to people who generally make $65,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need basic assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

  • Yes! We have gone to great lengths to ensure that our virtual VITA tax prep services protect you and your information. We were one of the first VITA sites to be IRS-approved for fully virtual tax preparation. Our team is trained and dedicated to making sure you receive the highest quality service possible.   • Our tax preparers have limited capacity to work with clients in-person. Call 617-712-3487 to find out if we can better serve you in person or over the phone. Currently not accepting walk-ins.

  • YES—Unemployment (UA) benefits are taxable income.

  • You can find other VITA locations where you receive free tax preparation here.

  • If the taxpayer’s balance is $50,000 or less, the taxpayer can make a payment arrangement at Apply Online for a Payment Plan (www.irs.gov/payments/online-payment-agreement-application). If the taxpayer can pay within 180 days, there is no user fee for an Online Payment Agreement (OPA). Taxpayers may also call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to set up a short-term payment plan.

  • There are two ways you can set up a payment agreement. Online with MassTaxConnect - https://mtc.dor.state.ma.us for payment agreements of $5,000 or less, or Calling the DOR Contact Center at (617) 887-6367 (for tax liabilities of $5,000 or less) or DOR Collections at (617) 887-6400 (for tax liabilities of $5,001 or greater.)

  • If you do not have a Social Security Number, you need to have an ITIN to file taxes. ITINs are not processed by us. Certain qualifications must be met in order to qualify for an ITIN. Please contact Greater Boston Legal Services Low Income Taxpayer Clinic at 617-603-1510 and leave a message. These clinics are available to assist taxpayers with any tax-related issue (i.e. audits, set up payment plans, etc.) free of costs.
